Questions
Before your first class
How old do I have to be?
Kids' classes are for ages 5 to 12. Adult classes are for ages 16 and up. If your teen is 13 to 15, send us a message and we will find the right class.
Can I watch a class first?
Yes. Parents and anyone thinking of joining can sit on the bench by the mat and watch any class.
What do I wear to the first class?
A plain t-shirt or rash guard and shorts without pockets or zippers. Take off jewelry, tie hair back, keep nails short and leave shoes at the door. A Gi to borrow is at the front desk.
What is a class like?
We bow in, warm up, drill one technique slowly with a partner, then finish with rounds at your pace. A coach explains every drill before you try it.
What do Gi and No-Gi mean?
Gi classes are in a uniform and belt, and grips on the uniform are part of the game. No-Gi classes are in shorts and a rash guard, so the grips change. You can train in one or both.
What is tapping, and what happens at a first roll?
A tap, with your hand or your voice, ends a round at once, and your partner lets go. At a first roll your partner is a coach or a senior student who works at your pace, and you can stop whenever you like.
Can adults and kids train together?
Kids and adults train in their own classes. A family plan puts everyone under one agreement, and parents can train while the kids' class is on.
Do I need to be fit or flexible?
No. All fitness levels start here. Warm-ups run at an easy pace, and a coach shows you how to scale each drill.
How do belts work?
Your coach promotes you when they see the skills, at a promotion. Nobody is given a date.
How does tuition work, and how do I cancel?
Tuition is set by the program, how many classes a week and whether you train one style or both. Adult plans start with three months, then run month to month, and kids' plans are month to month. You cancel in writing with 30 days' notice. We go through the figures at your first class.
What if I miss a class?
Come to another class at your level that week. If you need to pause for travel or an injury, tell the front desk.
I am visiting. Can I train for a few days?
Yes. Send a message with how long you are on the island and your belt, and we will find the classes that fit. Visitors are welcome at the Gi and No-Gi classes and at open mat.
Do you take part in tournaments?
Competing is optional. Some students enter and many never do, and the coaches talk it through with anyone who is curious.
Still have a question?
Send a message, or book a class and ask at the door.
